'They made me really angry': Gary Neville fumes at what he just saw Newcastle do

Gary Neville has slammed Newcastle United’s shocking performance at West Ham on Sunday.

West Ham beat Newcastle United 3-1 in what should be a nadir for Eddie Howe’s side.

They will almost certainly go on to lose many more away games this season given their record of no wins on the road in the Premier League since April, though another performance like that would not be acceptable.

Newcastle were awful against West Ham and while the hosts were certainly worthy winners, that was thanks in large part to the ineptitude of Howe’s team.

Neville, who was working as a pundit for NBC Sports, was understandably furious with their performance.

Gary Neville “really angry” about Newcastle United’s loss to West Ham

The former Manchester United and England defender zeroed in on Newcastle’s display when speaking after the game.

Neville said he was furious with their lack of urgency and claimed they had let their manager down with such a poor display.

“They made me really angry,” he said.

“I think probably in the last 20 minutes of that first half, but certainly in that second half, they didn’t have a shot for a long time in the game.

“I thought they really let the manager down, who is fantastic. A manager who has got a great record, but they’ve got a lot of work to do.”

After praising West Ham, Neville went on to say: “It’s almost like he’s [Howe] got to remind them that they have to work hard and be at an intense level every single week to be able to win a football match in the Premier League.

“The actual gap between the top and the bottom is big in some ways but if you drop your effort and you drop your actual intensity, you’re going to get found out very quickly in this league.

“And they’ve been found out today like you wouldn’t believe, Newcastle. I thought they were lethargic, leggy and I thought their attitude was really poor to that game.”

When did Newcastle United last win away game in the Premier League?

Newcastle’s last away victory in the Premier League came way back in April in a 3-0 win over Leicester.

In that time, they’ve been thrashed at Aston Villa and beaten by Arsenal.

This season, they’ve drawn at Villa, Leeds and Bournemouth while losing to Brighton and now West Ham.

That just isn’t good enough. Howe is concerned about Newcastle’s away form and it’s only the home results that are just about papering over the cracks.

Away games are by their very nature more difficult but there are ways to lose football matches. Sunday’s outing wasn’t one of them.

There were some alarming signs during Sunday’s loss. Heads were down and body language was poor.

With a trip to Brentford to come next week, there’s little hope of it improving before the international break.

Newcastle have to find a way through this. If it continues, there’s not much realistic hope of them pushing up into the upper echelons of the Premier League table.
