Disruptive pass rusher may actually be available before NFL trade deadline

Several NFL teams are pursuing impact pass rushers ahead of Tuesday’s 4 p.m. trade deadline. The Cincinnati Bengals, who initially took defensive end Trey Hendrickson off the market, may now be willing to trade him.

During Sunday’s Fox NFL Kickoff broadcast, NFL insider Jay Glazer reported that the Bengals are now open to dealing the veteran edge rusher if they can receive a substantial offer.

“They did say no originally,” Glazer said. “Then, in the last couple of days, a bunch of GMs said, ‘Hey, you better check this out because now they’re saying yes to us.’ Whether or not they can get what they’re looking for, I don’t know about that, but it seemed like a hard no about a week or so ago, and now it’s not.”

Hendrickson, 30, was a first-team All-Pro last season and finished second in the Associated Press Defensive Player of the Year voting after he recorded 17.5 sacks and 46 tackles, along with two forced fumbles. This season, Hendrickson has four sacks, 16 tackles and a forced fumble in seven games.

Multiple teams were interested in Hendrickson when he and the Bengals were at an impasse on a contract extension this offseason. In August, Sports Illustrated senior NFL writer Albert Breer reported that the Bengals were seeking a defensive player and a draft picks in return. The two sides eventually agreed on a restructured contract for this season worth $29 million. He will become a free agent five days after the Super Bowl, according to Over The Cap.

Glazer also identified several teams that could be active at the trade deadline who could try to acquire players at several positions.

“The Seattle Seahawks are very aggressive right now for several different positions,” Glazer said. “The Chicago Bears, the San Francisco 49ers, the Dallas Cowboys and the Eagles, they’re being aggressive as well.. I don’t think you’re going to see any big names moved, but they’re being aggressive.”
