Overheard inside the Lions’ locker room: Slap in the face and nothing exotic

DETROIT -- The Detroit Lions came out of the bye week looking like they needed more time to get things right.

Detroit lost 27-24 to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday from Ford Field. The loss snapped the team’s five-game winning streak over their divisional rival, and tightened the picture inside the NFC North.

The Vikings took away Detroit’s rushing attacked, created unrelenting pressure, dominated on special teams and took advantage of the Lions’ season-worst 10 penalties in Week 9 action.

#### **Here are some notable quotes from the Lions and Vikings players and coaches:**

**Lions HC Dan Campbell, on their inability to handle Minnesota’s blitz:** “Self-induced. Oh yeah. Very disappointing. We knew what we were going to get going into this. We knew there would be some wrinkles, but there was nothing that we hadn’t seen before. We did not -- we didn’t handle it. We did not handle it well. I know we got beat on a couple of them, just physically beat on a couple that we expect not to. We expect more out of our guys. But some of it, we act like it was something exotic -- it wasn’t. We just didn’t handle it well. We weren’t on the same page. We were not on the same page.”

**Campbell, on his level of concern with the offense coming out of the bye:** “It’s something where -- OK man, you go into the bye and you look at a few things and then we make a couple of tweaks and come out and you’re like, ‘Ah.’ We didn’t finish the way that I thought we would and I’m sure everybody. So, I don’t know if concern is the right word, but we got to clean it up. We got to find the right balance there to help us convert. We probably got to do a couple of things a little different. And we were, we were doing a few things different. But we may need to change up in some areas ... So, yeah we go to clean some things up. But I’m not in panic mode. ”

**Lions QB Jared Goff, on the unrelenting pressure he faced all day:** “Yeah, I thought they did a good job pass rushing, they had a good plan on defense. They always are hard to play against defensively. They do a good job over there. I have a ton of respect for the way they do things. They got after us up front a little bit and gave us some pressures we hadn’t seen and did a good job on defense.”

**Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy, on what it means returning from injury in Michigan:** “I’m a Michigan man through and through. I love this state. I love everything that went into cultivating and crafting who I am as an individual, who I am as a football player. “

**Vikings WR Justin Jefferson, on the game-sealing catch from Jalen Nailor:** “I was hyped. I said a couple words I can’t say, but I definitely was hyped. I love seeing us make those plays, especially in my receiver room. Those plays are the game-changing plays and of course if he drops that, then they have an opportunity to go down and score. It was great for us to stay on that field and to kneel that ball with zero-zero on that clock.”

**Lions WR Jameson Williams, on if he felt like they got physically outplayed:** “I didn’t feel that. I don’t think anybody can out-physical us. We’ve got a really physical team, that’s what we’re known for. Maybe they must’ve gotten us in a little bit of spots. They just got the upper hand today, and they came out on top. We just have to go watch the film and get ready for next week.”

**Lions CB Terrion Arnold, on his first career INT and what that does for his confidence:** “I’m not going to lie, I don’t really feel any type of way. We lost. Criticism -- I mean, you see I’m a confident person. I don’t even look at stuff like that, it never gets to me. I just look at plays in games like, ‘This is a play that I could’ve made.’ Like even the out-route on the goal line ... The pick is one thing, it’s a plus. But we lost, so my mindset is, ‘I’ve got to get better. I’ve got to continue to improve.’ Like even this game, I’ve got to tackle better. Plays like that, they constantly run through my mind because I want to be so great but not only for myself, for my teammates. And I feel like I could’ve done a better job just putting them in better situations or putting us in shorter yardage situations just even with my tackling.”

**Vikings DB Josh Metellus, on the importance of making a statement against the Lions:** “Y’all was there last time we were here. That was a heck of a game. We fell short. To be 2-0 in the division on the road, this was one of those ones that we needed. Next time we see this team is on Christmas at home. But to get one here in Ford Field, first one in (O’Connell’s) career, I just found that out on the walk over here, that was special.”

**Lions CB Amik Robertson, on if there was any rust coming off the bye:** “Nah, nah. Me personally, I don’t feel like there’s any rust. Like I said, man, I’m not gonna sit up here and make no excuses. We made a lot of mistakes out there as a whole, and they capitalized on it. Like I said, we gotta get back to the drawing board, bro.”

**Robertson, on McCarthy:** “I told y’all before, I got all the respect. He’s young, he’s resilient, and he came out and played well tonight.”

**Campbell, on the team’s horrid day on special teams:** “Well it gives them a little momentum right, when you’re able to hit those. We got hemmed up on a couple, they doubled us on the perimeter a couple of times. We had some of the other guys we need if that happens to show up, they didn’t show up. They got cut out of their gap. Look, it’s a volatile play. We’ve said that all before. We’ve handled it pretty well and it caught us today, it did. It still – you don’t want any of these to happen. It’s like a slap in the face. That happens and you don’t want them to happen, but hey, here it is. So now you’re forced to stand there and stare at it. So, now, how are we going to fix this? No different from the field goal getting blocked. You stand there, you preach it, you talk it, and it freaking happens to us. You get hit square in the face. It’s about cleaning it up, it’s about correcting errors and we move on.”
