With Bonfire Night around the corner, there was a feeling that fireworks could come early as City faced Bournemouth at the Etihad.
It promised to be a scorching encounter with the Cherries flying high in second spot in the Premier League table and the Blues looking to leapfrog them just behind Arsenal.
We had won all eight of our Premier League home games against Bournemouth and, in fact, the Cherries had lost 15 of their 16 Premier League games us.
But this season, Andoni Iraola’s team were on the longest unbeaten run of any current Premier League side, going without defeat in eight games since their opening day loss at Liverpool – five wins and three draws – with their 18 points proving their best start to a top-flight campaign.
That all pointed to a truly titanic tussle and the sub plot was that the game could feature two of the most in-form players in the competition this term.
Erling Haaland was the leading scorer with 11 goals – and the only player with double figures in front of goal.
For our opponents, 19-year-old Eli Kroupi had scored in each of his last three Premier League appearances.
Only three teenagers have ever scored in four or more consecutive games in the competition – Robbie Fowler (3 times in 1994-95), Nicolas Anelka (twice in 1998-99) and Francis Jeffers (August/September 2000).
Perhaps, the battle of the strikers would dictate the result.
