Ex-Michigan State WR and journeyman scores first NFL touchdown on explosive play

Persistence paid off for Cody White.

Nearly six years after skipping his senior season at Michigan State to go pro, the wide receiver scored his first NFL touchdown.

White, a former undrafted free agent who has bounced around the league, hauled in a 60-yard grab for the Seattle Seahawks in a 38-14 win at Washington on Sunday night. He caught a pass from Sam Darnold at about the 40, shook off one tackle and stayed in bounds along the sideline before reaching the end zone.

That was the lone catch of the game for White, who was called up from the practice squad on Sunday.

White, a former Walled Lake Western graduate, was a standout over three seasons with the Spartans. He posted 143 receptions for 1,967 yards and 12 touchdowns from 2017-19.

After going undrafted, White bounced around between the Chiefs, Giants and Steelers before arriving in Seattle in 2023. This season marked the first time he made a 53-man roster coming out of fall camp. He had eight career receptions for 79 yards in 21 games with one start before reaching the end zone on Sunday.

There were other former Spartans in the mix for the Seahawks on Sunday as running back Kenneth Walker III had 42 yards on 11 carries. Receiver Ricky White, who played in 2020 for Michigan State before transferring to UNLV, was called up from the practice squad alongside Cody White but didn’t have a catch.
