Report: 44-year-old manager rules himself out of running for Wolves job after links

Wolves are unlikely to appoint Sporting Lisbon manager Rui Borges as Vitor Pereira’s successor, according to Portuguese publication Record.

The 44-year-old tactician has reportedly ruled himself out of the running for the vacant Molineux role, despite reports on Sunday linking Wolves with a move for the Portuguese manager.

Wolves announced their decision to part ways with Pereira on Sunday after the club went winless in their opening 10 games of the Premier League season.

A 3-0 defeat by Fulham on Saturday turned out to be Pereira’s last game in charge, with the Molineux side sitting rock bottom of the league table, eight points off safety.

According to GIVEMESPORT sources, Wolves are considering both Middlesbrough boss Rob Edwards and former manager Gary O’Neil as potential successors to Pereira.

Borges, who joined Sporting in December last year, has also been linked with the vacancy at Molineux, but Record suggest the Portuguese coach has ruled out the possibility of changing clubs mid-season.

The 44-year-old reportedly remains ‘fully focused’ on winning a three-peat with Sporting this term and has enjoyed a promising start to the season, with the Portuguese club losing only once in their opening 10 games.

Borges is under contract with Sporting until June 2027 and is reported to have a €20m (£17.5m) release clause.

For the second season in a row, Wolves are on the lookout for a new manager mid-campaign, having replaced Gary O’Neil with Pereira last December.

The Portuguese manager was only handed a new three-year contract by the Molineux hierarchy in September, which will not be paid in full. According to GIVEMESPORT sources, Pereira will be paid out only for this season.

Wolves secured just two wins in 13 games under Pereira this term, both coming in the Carabao Cup. The West Midlands club beat West Ham and Everton but were knocked out in the last 16 by Chelsea on Wednesday.

Wolves were 19th when Pereira replaced O’Neil last season, and the Portuguese tactician guided them to safety by finishing 16th. His last Premier League victory came in April, a 3-0 win against Leicester.
