It is clear there has been improvement in Andrew Berry's drafting over time, this doesn't excuse the past though.
When it comes to looking at how any General Manager has done in the draft I will always tend to focus on the first two rounds. These are the money rounds where rosters are made. Once you go beyond this it is much more hit and miss. Let us look at those top picks:
10 - Jedrick Wills
44 - Grant Delpit
26 - Greg Newsome
52 - Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah
54 - Michael Hall
5 - Mason Graham
33 - Carson Schwesinger
36 - Quinshon Judkins
Only having eight top picks in six draft isn't good enough. The Watson trade is to blame for this and a big reason why they haven't been able to keep adding young talent. Overall these players have been really good. Outside of Wills you appear to have seven starters. My big frustration here is the lack of premium positions, I want a focus on quarterbacks, wide receivers, tackles, edge defenders and cornerbacks. We have seen two of these selected in the eight picks, this is a real issue.
Many Browns fans don't like Berry's commitment to drafting younger players despite the evidence saying it is a benefit. I have studied the efficiency of the age guardrails, and you can view previous articles on them here: 2020, 2021 & 2022? With several years of evidence, I think if you are viewing the age guardrails as something negative then you aren't looking at the facts and results that are in front of you. Another thing to be aware of is we all overvalue picks outside the first two rounds far too much and expect a hit rate that isn't reasonable.
We are starting to see many players move towards being three contract players in Cleveland, this is only possible by drafting young. The Cleveland Browns roster is also in a stronger position due to Jimmy Haslam's spending commitment, so the idea that you ever need to draft starters is poor process. Draft, develop and extend.
