Leeds United icon urged to take over at relegation rivals Wolves, he left Elland Road in 2023

On Sunday, another Premier League managerial casualty. Leeds United’s relegation rivals Wolves decided to make a change after a 3-0 defeat to Fulham and sacked Vitor Pereira.

It was inevitable for Vitor Pereira. Despite signing a new contract as Wolves manager just days before Leeds went to the Midlands and beat his side 3-1, the Wolves board have now decided to axe Pereira.

Wolves currently sit bottom of the Premier League with just two points in the bank, having failed to win a single game so far. They are in danger of being the first non-promoted side to be relegated since 2023.

Plenty of names are already being discussed as his replacement. Brendan Rodgers is in the frame after his Celtic resignation, Gary O’Neil could make a return. Ange Postecoglou is ready after Forest let him go.

Matt Murray wants Leeds icon to become Wolves manager

Other names have been bandied about, as Wolves look to replace Pereira in what was the fourth Premier League sacking of the season after Nuno Espirito Santo, Graham Potter and Postecoglou were axed.

Speaking to TalkSPORT (03/11, 7.45AM), former Wolves goalkeeper Matt Murray wants Robbie Keane to take over. Keane has sparkled in management since leaving Leeds as Sam Allardyce’s assistant in 2023.

“You see names being bandied around. Robbie Keane, the Wolves fans love him and he loves the club. He did well at Maccabi Tel Aviv, if you look at his record in Europe, he has done so, so well,” Murray said.

“He’s doing well at Ferencvaros, he has a clear way of playing. Wolves haven’t fielded an English outfield player this season so the fact Robbie has worked with all these foreign players won’t be an issue to him.

“He knows the Premier League, he hasn’t managed here, but he’s been assistant for Middlesbrough, for Ireland. I’m not sure what his compensation would be,” the former Wolves goalkeeper added, on Keane.

Robbie Keane’s Wolves connection and managerial stats

Keane had entered the managerial world before his spells as Ireland and Middlesbrough assistant, having worked in India. But after his stint as Leeds’ assistant under Allardyce, he became Maccabi Tel Aviv boss.

Winning the league in Israel, he has since moved to Hungary with Ferencvaros and done the same. Keane is shining in the outer reaches of Europe and obviously has a connection with Wolves and the club’s fans.

Keane joined Wolves as a 16-year-old in 1996, before going on to score 29 goals in 87 senior games as a youngster. It saw Keane earn a £6m move to Coventry before Inter, Leeds, Tottenham and Liverpool.

Keane was in the frame to replace Rodgers at Celtic, but remains in Hungary. As he continues to shine with Ferencvaros, Keane is going to continue to be linked with a return to English football.
