Robin Roefs has enjoyed a good start to his Sunderland career, after arriving at the Stadium of Light from NEC Nijmegen in August.
The Black Cats reportedly invested around €10.5m to sign the goalkeeper and gave him a contract until 2030.
Roefs has been the first-choice goalkeeper for Régis Le Bris, and he has started in every Premier League match for Sunderland. The 22-year-old has kept four clean sheets and conceded seven goals from nine matches.
NEC Nijmegen general manager Wilco van Schaik spoke to ESPN NL’s Goedemorgen Eredivisieis about the stopper. He’s thrilled with the agreement negotiated with Régis Le Bris’ side and Voetbal Primeur have relayed his comments.
The Dutchman’s move to Sunderland is currently the Eredivisie side’s club-record sale. The price could rise further if bonuses and sell-on clause are taken into account.
Aad de Mos asked Wilco van Schaik whether a resale percentage has been agreed with Sunderland.
“Yes, that’s also a plus. That’s very nice,” he said.
“It’s obviously impossible what we received for Roefs, but these are the amounts we’re going to trade for.”
As well as the transfer fee and sell-on clause, the Dutch club are also entitled to more money via bonuses.
According to the outlet, part of the bonuses are linked to the English club staying in the Premier League. Sunderland are ninth in the table and can move to second if they beat Everton later today.
The NEC Nijmegen official jokes about spending part of the potential bonus payment.
“But I’ve already spent half of that,” Wilco van Schaik explained.
