Jeff Stelling names surprise suitor waiting to take over from 'under pressure' Daniel Farke at Leeds

TalkSport presenter Jeff Stelling has suggested that Steven Gerrard could be in line to replace Daniel Farke as the manager of Leeds United.

The pressure is beginning to build on Daniel Farke after Leeds slumped to a devastating 3-0 defeat away against Brighton.

Some Leeds fans urged the club to follow Wolves’ lead and replace Farke after Leeds’ relegation rivals elected to part company with their head coach, Vitor Pereira, who had overseen a 10-game winless run from the start of the season.

Despite enjoying a solid start to the new Premier League season, Leeds are slipping closer to the bottom three, having watched West Ham close the gap with a win over Newcastle.

Now, Stelling has suggested that former Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard could be in the frame to take over at Leeds should the club decide to change head coach.

Jeff Stelling links Steven Gerrard with Leeds United

Speaking on TalkSport Breakfast on the morning of the third of November, Stelling threw Gerrard’s name in the ring as a potential option to take over at Leeds.

Gerrard was linked with the previously vacant manager’s position at Rangers, in a process led by the 49ers. Stelling believes he could be in the running to replace Farke.

Stelling said: “Daniel Farke wasn’t universally popular with Leeds fans when they got promoted, and he’s under a lot of pressure right now. And the manner of their defeat, I think, at the weekend at Brighton has left a lot of Leeds fans questioning him.

“And I just wonder whether Steven Gerrard is just maybe holding fire for something like that, although I’m not sure whether an ex-Liverpool man can go and manage Leeds.”

Stelling continued: “Look at the fixtures, Ally. I know you can’t read, but Leeds have got Forest away and then Villa, Man City, Chelsea and Liverpool are the four after that. Scary, isn’t it?”

Ally McCoist added: “It’s a strange one, isn’t it, Jeff? I’ve got to say to you, because we have been, and I think quite correctly, commenting on the results of the newly promoted sides, and generally speaking, how well they’ve done.

“And they have done well, particularly Sunderland. But I’m looking at the league table, mate, and Leeds and Burnley are in 16th and 17th.”

The 49ers have considered Steven Gerrard for Leeds United in the past

Gerrard has been out of work since leaving Saudi Pro League club Al-Ettifaq, having previously managed Rangers and Aston Villa.

This is not the first time he has been linked with a move to Leeds, with several reports suggesting he could come to Elland Road in recent years.

Andrea Radrizzani and Victor Orta reportedly considered Gerrard as a candidate to replace Jesse Marsch as the club battled against relegation in the 2022/23 season.

The 49ers also reportedly considered a move for Gerrard in the summer of 2023, before they appointed Farke as head coach.

With a patchy recent track record, aside from one title win with Rangers in Scotland, Leeds fans may need some convincing that Gerrard is the man for the job, should Stelling’s prediction come true.
