AFC Bournemouth travelled to Manchester on Sunday to take on former champions Manchester City. On this occasion, it was the Cherries who were higher placed in the Premier League table, maintaining their second-place position despite other teams playing earlier in the weekend.
A win for the home side however, would see the Cherries drop to fourth, whilst City would leapfrog them.
AFC Bournemouth made a few notable changes to the starting line-up, including Diakite back in the Cherries defence and Justin Kluivert dropping back down to the bench.
After the match, AFC Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola told Sky Sports…
“It was not a bad performance by us. We are starting quite well in games. Even when they scored the first goal we were controlling a lot. You have to accept the way we play there are risks.
“It is a season where we have the challenge of a lot of new players but we also have advantage where we have players who have been here for three pre-seasons. We have played just 10 games and we still need a lot of points.
“We have to continue to do the same things. We have another big challenge because we play Aston Villa away next. We have to try and correct the things that didn’t work well today. I am happy where we are.”

I wouldn’t say that was a bad or even a mediocre performance. But the standards we’ve been setting recently, I think we played a little beneath ourselves in some regards.
Defending as a unit was pretty bad and disappointing to see. I don’t think City were even that great today. Oh well.

We got ahead of ourselves defensively, pushing up in the first half, leading to Haaland’s goals. Andoni fixed it at HT only for Jimenez to get that knock, coming back on when, he should have been subbed for their third. Andoni actually watched the tackle / Injury back and knew it wasn’t great, but we didn’t move in time.
Other than that, we looked alright, not the end of the world.

AFCB went in hope of continuing their unbeaten run and coming away from City with something, but in the end, it wasn’t to be, and we were beaten by a better team on the day.
City 15 shots, 8 on target. AFCB 8 shots, 5 on target.
The difference today was Haaland, who was MOM, he is just the ‘Roy of the Rovers’ for City.

The back four did not cover themselves in glory today, but to be fair, they were dealing with one of the two best strikers in world football, and one of the best providers (Cherki). I was disappointed to see Jimenez injured, left on the pitch, and then play in a verrrrry risky position and be caught out for their third goal.
In any event, we didn’t get any fewer points than I really expected, and most of our match days will go better than this one did. Turning the page. – To join the conversation, please click here.
