Wolves new manager search latest with Middlesbrough boss Rob Edwards contact update

Wolverhampton Wanderers begin their search for a new manager today, with Middlesbrough’s Rob Edwards being strongly linked with the role.

The Athletic reported on Sunday that the Boro boss is a ‘prominent candidate’ for the role at Molineux. Edwards made over 100 appearances for the club as a player and then started his coaching career with the Black Country club too.

But, as things stand, Boro aren’t understood to have had any contact from Wolves, and it’s very much business as usual as preparations continue for the trip to Leicester City. Edwards will have the chance to address the speculation on Monday.

The Boro boss will hold his pre-match Leicester City press conference at Rockliffe Park at 12.45 pm, before he and the players then make the trip to Leicester ahead of Tuesday’s Championship game, where Boro are looking to bounce back from Saturday’s defeat to Watford.

Edwards will inevitably be asked about the Wolves speculation, with current betting markets having the Boro boss as second favourite for the role behind former Boro midfielder Gary O’Neil. Current Sporting CP boss Rui Borges had also been linked but, according to reports in Portugal, has ruled himself out.

Former Boro boss Michael Carrick was also an early name being touted with the vacant post, though he has started to drift in the betting markets. He’s also being linked with the vacant Southampton post after Boro’s Championship rivals sacked Will Still on Sunday.

As for Edwards, it was only Friday that he addressed the Boro role and what made it so appealing, as he prepared for his return to Vicarage Road, where he spent a short 11-game spell in charge back in 2022.

On how that made him appreciate the stability he now has on Teesside, Edwards said: “I think that was one of the main reasons I wanted to come. Steve Gibson as an owner makes this job jump out and I feel it’s one of the best jobs you’re going to get at this level, or any level in the country now, to be honest. It’s not as normal now to have someone like Steve as the owner. Of course, that was a big pull for me.”
