Summerville and Bowen shine under the radar vs Newcastle

By Louis Nixon

**Jarrod Bowen and Crysencio Summerville’s performances have gone under the radar as the Hammers improved massively against Newcastle.**

The Hammers finally honed in on a victory against Newcastle in the London Stadium to give us our first set of three points in what feels like forever. The 3-1 victory has given the fans a reason to praise the team after a over a year of what was almost constant criticism of a lot of players.

Across the 90 minutes, the one position that felt the most silent were the wingers, whilst Jarrod Bowen thumped the post only four minutes in, it would be the closest he’d get to scoring on the day.

Summerville on the other side didn’t really have a clear-cut chance all game, bar one where he swung and missed the ball, but even then, it still would’ve been a difficult scoring opportunity.

However, despite the lacklustre amount of goal-scoring opportunities from the pair, they were both vital in terms of yesterday’s performance. Their performances have gone under the radar because of the praise some of the more-improved players like Todibo and Paqueta have been getting.

In the second half, one of the biggest factors was that Nuno’s side decided to sit deep in the second half, which primarily allowed Bowen & Summerville to thrive, seeing as their pace and dribbling skills allowed them to drive the ball up the pitch; they acted as the creators and ball progressors rather than the scorers.

A perfect proof of this was for Soucek’s goal as Bowen’s run was crucial to the build-up up and without his positioning, it likely wouldn’t have allowed us to put the nail in the coffin and score a third.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise to most if Nuno continues to utilise the wingers in this way, but both were unlucky not to add to the goals, especially Bowen’s wonderful strike just three minutes in.
