Barcelona working on contract renewal of teenage La Masia prodigy who has impressed Flick

According to a recent report from SPORT, it has come to light that Hansi Flick’s confidence in La Masia talent Pedro ‘Dro’ Fernandez remains absolute, so much so that Barcelona are already preparing to secure his long-term future.

As per the outlet, the club plans to reward the youngster with a contract renewal once he turns 18 in January 2027.

Dro’s journey has been nothing short of remarkable. The 17-year-old midfielder impressed Flick during the pre-season, earning a surprise call-up to the first-team preparations.

Since then, there has been no turning back.

With the first team already

So far this season, the teenager has already featured three times for the senior side, including two starts – one in La Liga against Real Sociedad and another in the Champions League against Olympiacos.

His latest cameo came in Barcelona’s recent win over Elche, where he was introduced in the closing stages.

That appearance was not just a routine substitution, as it was a sign that Flick intends to continue nurturing his growth at the top level.

The same report highlights a major turning point in Dro’s development. While still part of the youth setup and with a relatively low release clause, several clubs across Europe began showing interest.

Among them was Manchester City, who reportedly offered conditions far superior to what Barcelona had at the time.

This interest pushed Barça to act, reinforcing their belief in the young midfielder by fast-tracking him into the first-team setup.

Renewal on track

Negotiations for his long-term renewal are already underway.

In fact, Barcelona want to ensure that as soon as Dro turns 18, he will have a new deal.

The youngster, for his part, is thrilled with his current situation since his progress has been steady and visible under Flick.

The plan for the coming months is that Dro will continue to collect first-team minutes while occasionally featuring for the reserves.

And by January, there would be a renewal on the table.
