“I’m No.1”: Robert Sanchez Breaks Silence on Chelsea Goalkeeper Hierarchy

Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez has reiterated that he is the first choice at Stamford Bridge. The Spain international has been starting regularly this season and is still a key part of Enzo Maresca’s team, having improved his play since last spring.

Sanchez missed out on some playing time with a short knock in May 2025, but he came back to play a big part in the end of last season. Speaking about his position at Chelsea, Sanchez said in a recent interview:

“I feel confident, I am fit and at my best. I have always felt settled because the club always told me I am No.1.”

Sanchez has played in 144 Premier League games, kept 43 clean sheets, and made 380 saves. This shows that he has been playing at the highest level since he joined Brighton and then Chelsea in 2023. This season, he has started with several clean sheets in the league, which shows that his defense is better organized and more consistent.

What Maresca said about Robert Sanchez

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has spoken many times about Robert Sanchez’s status and form in 2025. Back in March, he said that Sanchez would be his starter again after a short demotion and made it clear what he expects from the goalkeeper.

Maresca said in January that Sanchez would stay No. 1 “for the rest of the season,” but he also said that the Spaniard was still not at his best. Those comments came after some very public mistakes earlier in the campaign.

Maresca said on March 14 that the plan was not to change keepers:

“Now he’s back, hopefully we are not going to change until the end… He’s getting better, but he’s still far, far, far from where I want him to be.”

Sanchez has since taken up the No. 1 slot, with Filip Jorgensen and others in the backup role.
