Gary Neville furious at Newcastle United - players accused of doing one thing to Eddie Howe

NUFC absolutely LOVE the Carabao Cup 😍

Newcastle United were humbled in brutal fashion by West Ham United on Sunday.

Gary Neville has ripped into Newcastle United for letting Eddie Howe down against West Ham United.

An unforgivable performance saw the Magpies surrender an early lead to capitulate to the Premier League strugglers. For context, West Ham remain three points adrift from safety despite brushing Newcastle aside yesterday.

Many backed the Magpies to get their first league away win of the season. That looked to be the case when Jacob Murphy fired the visitors ahead after four minutes.

However, a lethargic Newcastle choked on the road again to suffer their fourth Premier League. Goals from Lucas Paqueta, Thomas Soucek and a Sven Botman own goal put the Magpies to the sword.

Gary Neville ‘angry’ at Newcastle United

Speaking post-match, former Manchester United defender Neville hit out at Newcastle players for failing Howe. He told NBC Sports: “They made me really angry. I think probably in the last 20 minutes of that first half, but certainly in that second half, they didn’t have a shot for a long time in the game.

“I thought they really let the manager down, who is fantastic. A manager who has got a great record, but they’ve got a lot of work to do. It’s almost like he’s (Howe) got to remind them that they have to work hard and be at an intense level every single week to be able to win a football match in the Premier League.

“The actual gap between the top and the bottom is big in some ways but if you drop your effort and you drop your actual intensity, you’re going to get found out very quickly in this league. And they’ve been found out today like you wouldn’t believe, Newcastle. I thought they were lethargic, leggy and I thought their attitude was really poor in that game.”

Alan Shearer vents at away form

Alan Shearer also fumed at Newcastle as their away woes continued. He said: “It’s a different style, obviously with what happened in the summer. Getting used to playing a different way… but I don’t like what I’m seeing away from home.

“I get that things have changed but that doesn’t stop you from running around and being aggressive. If you go back to last season, the one thing Newcastle were was tough to play against. The thing about going away from home is you might have 3,000 fans inside the stadium.

“At home, you have 52,000 you will not let you not put a shift in, not graft, not work, tackle or all the things that made Newcastle successful. I’m not seeing that away from home.”

‘It could have been anyone’ - Eddie Howe

Howe made three substitutions at the break and admitted post-match he “could have taken anyone off” given how bad his team were. He told reporters: "I almost could have taken anyone off. That was a reflection of where we were at that moment in the game and it's very rare for me to feel that way.

“I don't think I have since I've been manager of Newcastle. I felt the team needed some shaking up at half-time. That's why I did what I did."
