Former Everton striker Tom Cannon is enduring a really tough spell in his career at Sheffield United.

Tom Cannon was really highly rated coming through the ranks at Everton, as he had a prolific record at youth level.

Cannon scored over 50 goals for the under-18s and 21s before going on to make four first-team appearances.

After a productive loan spell at Preston North End, Everton decided to sanction his sale to Leicester City for around £7.5m.

The 2002-born barely got a look in at Leicester and was sold to Sheffield United just 18 months after joining.

Now, Cannon finds himself in a really sad situation after Chris Wilder makes a brutal decision.

Tom Cannon banished from Sheffield United squad

Sheffield United shelled out a whopping £10m on Cannon’s signature in January, and he arrived with great fanfare.

However, the former Toffees striker just hasn’t got going for whatever reason as he’s scored just one goal in 29 appearances.

Blades fans have been highly critical of Cannon, and now manager Chris Wilder has made a brutal decision.

Wilder left the Republic of Ireland forward out of his squad against Derby County on the weekend, and when asked why, he gave a pretty blunt answer.

“No, I didn’t pick them (Cannon and Louie Barry). It’s my decision not to involve them today.”

The Sheffield United boss then added: “We have to play a certain way because we don’t have a number 9”

Tom Cannon should join Preston North End

Preston North End were trying to bring back Cannon to Deepdale in the summer transfer window, so perhaps they could reignite their interest this winter.

The 22-year-old scored eight goals in the six months he spent on loan there during the 2022/23 season, so he’s remembered fondly.

North End have a number of former Everton connections as well, with Harrison Armstrong, Thierry Small, and Lewis Gibson plying their trade there.

They’re flying high in the Championship and currently occupy a play-off position, so it would be a really good move for him.
