Rooney says ex-United stars back Welbeck - and not just because of mum's cooking

Wayne Rooney says he and other former Manchester United players would love to see Danny Welbeck back in the England squad.

And it is not only because of his mum’s home cooking.

Welbeck is being linked with a Three Lions recall after an impressive run of form with [Albion](https://www.theargus.co.uk/sport/albion/?ref=au), including six goals in his last five games.

Speaking on his podcast The Wayne Rooney show, the former Manchester United and Everton forward said: "He scores goals, he works hard, he's having a purple patch and he's put himself in a position where Thomas Tuchel will definitely have to look at him.

"Behind Harry Kane he is the most in-form England striker. He's given himself a chance."

England are preparing for their last two World Cup qualifiers, at home to Serbia and away to Albania, having already qualified.

Rooney believes Kane could even be rested for forthcoming international windows as he tackles a busy season with Bayern Munich.

A fit and firing Kane looks to be essential for England if they are to challenge for the ultimate prize in North America and Mexico next summer.

Welbeck made his breakthrough at local club Manchester United while Rooney was at his peak.

Rooney revealed his younger team-mate showed traits then which are still evident in his Albion performances now.

He said: "He was brilliant, such a lovely person. When he played he pressed really high, he was aggressive, he was quick to get to the ball, really clever, good feet and he scored goals.

"I do have to say the best thing about Daniel is his mother used to bring me chicken and rice every Thursday.

"It was so nice. I used to always look forward to that.

"All the ex-players at United are in a WhatsApp group, so we all chat.

"He's been on fire. Whenever anyone does well we are all behind them, supporting them.

"I am pleased for him because he had injuries throughout his career that hampered him, but he seems to be able to stay fit now and he has shown his ability and what he can do."
