'A similar situation' - Former Aston Villa boss compares Wolves with nightmare relegation season

Sherwood reckons the Portuguese head coach, axed on Sunday with Wolves sitting bottom of the Premier League after picking up just two points from their first 10 matches, was a victim of the club’s poor summer recruitment.

Pereira kept Wolves up last season with room to spare after taking charge in December with the team in the relegation zone but then saw key players including Matheus Cunha and Rayan Ait-Nouri depart.

His situation strikes a chord with Sherwood, who rescued Villa from the drop after taking charge in February 2015 but was then sacked 10 matches into the following season with the team bottom of the table.

He told Sky Sports: “If you don’t get results as a manager you are going to get sacked because they (the clubs) never really look at themselves.

“They never really look in-house. What they look at is the job the manager is doing.

“I had a very similar situation at Villa. I went in, did very well, kept them in the division, took them to the cup final.

“The following year, Benteke sold, Fabian Delph sold, Ron Vlaar sold, Tom Cleverley left. The heart of my team was ripped out.

“We brought in some players who had never experienced the Premier League before, similar to what Wolves have done and they struggled. It takes them time to settle. Some of them never settled.

“They ended up having three managers after me and ended up in the Championship.”

Sherwood continued: “I worry for Wolves because perhaps stop looking at your managers and start looking at your recruitment policy and the players you are bringing to the club and the tools you are giving to the man in charge.”
