**There are two Newcastle Uniteds this season. Champions League Newcastle and Premier League Newcastle.**
Champions League Newcastle often show up in the Carabao Cup, too, but given the number of changes to the lineup, we're going to count them as a separate entity entirely.
One player who typifies this duality more than any other is [£45 million winger Anthony Gordon](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/64441380). The winger has four goals and an assist in the Champions League this season, but nothing in the Premier League.
Indeed, the Sky Sports commentator reeled off a stat early in the game on Sunday that we were sure he'd got wrong: Anthony Gordon has no goals or assists in the last 18 Premier League games. That wasn't a misquote, and in fact, it's now 19 games after Sunday.
Alan Shearer points a finger at Anthony Gordon as an example of Newcastle's big problem this season
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
That hasn't gone unnoticed by Alan Shearer, who namechecked the England winger during a rant on The Rest Is Football this week.
> “They’ve got to get players into goal scoring positions, because there’s only four of them scored league goals at this moment in time,” Shearer said on the Rest Is Football podcast.“Anthony Gordon’s been really good in the Champions League, hasn’t done it in the league yet.

> “There’s a few like that as well. So they’ve got to get back to being tough and back to basics, what made them successful.”
Anthony Gordon needs to get reading those books he's so fond of
---------------------------------------------------------------
We know that the Anthony Gordon we had last season was a shadow of his former self, so it's not too surprising that his stats were so low, but he promised us he's back to his best this season, so why are we only seeing it in one competition?
If it's a case of every Premier League defence being fully aware of his style of play, then maybe it's time to switch things up.
Whatever it is that's going on in his head, he needs to get his beak into one of these psychology books he's always reading and finding an answer to put himself right. Quickly!
