The Dallas Mavericks may have lucked out getting the number one overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, but the Western Conference franchise is still reeling from the fact that they traded away a generational superstar that is going to dominate the league for the many years to come.

While former Duke star Cooper Flagg has brought a lot of reason for optimism to the Mavericks fanbase since being taken with the first pick in June’s draft, Luka Doncic is lighting it up with the Los Angeles Lakers after being traded by Dallas general manager Nico Harrison last season.
In fact, Doncic has been so impressive over the first few weeks of the 2025-26 NBA season that he’s averaging over 45 points per game, which is more than Mavericks star trio Flagg, Anthony Davis and Klay Thompson combined.
Doncic has the Lakers 5-2 to start the year, while the Mavericks have struggled to find consistency with a 2-6 record and the second-worst mark in the West. Flagg still has an immense amount of potential, however, Doncic’s proven ability in the league to be a top scorer each night must sting for Dallas fans.
