Eagles acquire one of top available linebackers from Patriots rival (report)

The NFL trade deadline isn’t until Tuesday, but the reigning Super Bowl champions got started a day early.

The Eagles acquired star linebacker Jaelan Phillips from the Dolphins, according to multiple reports. Miami will receive Philadelphia’s own third-round pick in 2026 and not the one it acquired from the the New York Jets in the Haason Reddick trade.

The Dolphins drafted Phillips with the 18th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. The edge rusher made an immediate impact, playing in all 17 games with a career-high 8.5 sacks and 42 tackles. In 2022, Phillips started 15 games for the Dolphins and amassed seven sacks.

Phillips looked as if he was going to have a career year in 2023 but a torn Achilles limited him to just eight games. In eight games for the Dolphins that season, he totaled 6.5 sacks.

The 27-year-old will become an unrestricted free agent after this season.

With Phillips off the market, it’s possible the Dolphins will also shop Matthew Judon and Bradley Chubb. The New England Patriots could be in the market for an edge rusher, but the Dolphins might not be inclined to make a trade with their division rival in order to help them.
