Middlesbrough boss Rob Edwards is “surprised” by Leicester City’s run of defeats, but only because he feels they’ve not earned the results their performances have merited.

Edwards brings his high-flying Boro to the King Power Stadium on Tuesday night where they take on a City outfit that have lost their last three to slump to 14th in the table.

While Marti Cifuentes has criticised the level of performance shown by his players, Edwards feels they’ve been “unlucky” with how some of the games have panned out.

“They’ve got really, really good players, especially for this level,” Edwards said at his press conference on Monday. “They play in a good way.

“They’ve been unlucky. They’ve created big chances and not quite taken them and then been punished at times in games where they’ve dominated.

“They do have a lot of the ball, they have a really clear way of playing and they have very good individuals once they get into the wide areas especially.

“They can dominate a game, they can push you back and they build confidence and momentum from there as well.

“Of late, some of the results haven’t gone the way they wanted. It does surprise me that they’ve not picked up results but only because their performances have been good. I’m trying to compliment them there. It shows the fine margins in games.

“It’s a big football club with high expectations. They’ve had results that haven’t gone their way, but they’re good, with a lot of good individuals and well-coached by Marti.

“From the outside looking in, people just look at results. And football is about results. But in our job, you have to look at how to get results, and so you have to look at the performances as well, and their performances have been good. They’re not getting what they deserve.”

While Boro are second in the division, they arrive on the back of a 3-0 defeat to Watford, and with Edwards subject of speculation around the vacant manager’s job at Wolves, where he made over 100 appearances as a player. He dismissed the idea that the links might be a distraction.

He said: “I was told by my daughter yesterday! So that probably tells you where we’re at.

“I can understand it, with my links to the club, but my full focus is on the job here, which is a brilliant job, and trying to turn things around from the weekend in a really big game against Leicester. All I care about is trying to win tomorrow.”
