FOXBOROUGH – K’Lavon Chaisson is living up to his first-round expectations. It just took a little bit longer for the edge rusher to develop.
On Sunday, Chaisson notched another sack, giving him a career-high 5.5 on the season. After signing a 1-year contract with the Patriots, this 26-year-old is having the best season of his six-year NFL career.
After Sunday’s win, Chaisson wouldn’t take the credit.
“I think it’s obviously the dominance of the front,” Chaisson said when asked about his career-best stats. “We’ve got the big boys inside causing havoc, Christian Barmore, Milton Williams. I’ve got Harold (Landry) on the other side, fighting through chips, trying to help me win my 1-on-1s. Of course, we had our guys in the backend giving us an extra second to get to the quarterback. Everybody is playing a key role in this, and I’m just excited to be a part of this defense.”
Drafted 20th overall in Jacksonville, Chaisson came into the NFL as an athletic and raw pass rusher. He notched 6.5 sacks in his third collegiate season at LSU, where he also won a National title.
With the Jaguars, however, success was harder to come by. Chaisson totaled five sacks in his first four seasons. In 2024, he signed with Carolina but was cut at the end of training camp. That led Chaisson to Las Vegas, where he signed with the Raiders’ practice squad.
The veteran was signed to the 53-man roster and finished last season with a career-best 5 sacks in 15 games.
It hasn’t taken him long to surpass those totals this season. Chaisson already tied a career-high with quarterback hits (9). He also had his first fumble recovery for a touchdown in Tennessee. That led him to being named the AFC Defensive Player of the Week.
Chaisson said it’s been special to be in New England this season.
“I think we all have that fight and mentality that we want to win regardless of how it looks on film,” Chaisson said. “There are some things that we want to clean up, but we’re going to keep fighting, keep scraping until whatever plays out and make sure we have more points at the end of the game.”
