Giants Receive Urgent Final Trade Trade Deadline Warning

The New York Giants lost their third straight game on Sunday, falling to the San Francisco 49ers by a score of 34-24 in a mostly lifeless effort at the Meadowlands.

The Giants are now just 2-7 on the season, and all of the good will they built up during Jaxson Dart’s first few starts now seems like a distant memory.

With the NFL trade deadline looming, some have been wondering if New York could potentially swing a deal for a wide receiver to help Dart the rest of the way, but Dan Duggan of The Athletic feels that the Giants general manager Joe Schoen shouldn’t even be thinking about making a move.

“Let's set aside the absurdity of a 2-7 team being buyers at Tuesday's trade deadline under any circumstance and drill down on why it would be particularly egregious for Schoen to deal away draft assets for an immediate upgrade: The reason the Giants are in this dire position is because of Schoen's failures,” Duggan wrote.

Duggan added that he does not feel that adding a receiver is a must before the trade deadline.

“Schoen made this bed, so he should have to lie in it. If he makes a desperate trade for a receiver this week, it would further illustrate the mistake of keeping this regime for a hot-seat season,” Duggan wrote. “The reality is that having bad receivers as a rookie won't do irreparable damage to Dart. So the Giants need to operate with the big picture in mind, which means holding onto valuable draft picks, which, as usual under this regime, are on pace to be near the top of each round.”

The Giants lost Malik Nabers for the season due to a torn ACL during Dart’s first start back in Week 4. That has left the rookie quarterback with very limited options in the aerial attack, but he has been able to manage with Wan’Dale Robinson, Darius Slayton and his tight ends.

Of course, running back Cam Skattebo’s season-ending ankle injury in Week 8 further compounded the issue, but Duggan still doesn’t think it would be wise for New York to part with draft picks for a quick fix.

Plus, Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll seem rather likely to lose their jobs after the campaign concludes anyway, so it would probably be beneficial to just punt to the eventual new regime at this point.

New York will face the Chicago Bears next Sunday.
