Forget O'Neil and Carrick: Wolves must go and hire 'insane' manager instead, Fosun considering…

Wolves are advancing in talks to bring Gary O'Neil back to Molineux to replace Vitor Pereira, but the better option in the long run might be Rob Edwards.

GIVEMESPORT sources confirmed on Monday morning that O'Neil is advancing in talks to become the new Wolves manager, potentially returning to the club just over a year after he was sacked. O'Neil is now the frontrunner for the job, but the Midlands outfit are said to be assessing other options at the same time.

GIVEMESPORT understands that former defender and current Middlesbrough manager Edwards is also an option they are considering, but they will have to pay compensation to get him out of the Championship club. The Wanderers will likely want a swift appointment with Premier League action returning this weekend, although there is an international break coming next week.

Wolves Should Hire Edwards Over O'Neil

With Wolves currently bottom of the Premier League with just two points, relegation seems like a formality at the moment. As it stands, Wolves are on track to barely hit 10 points if they continue how they've been playing, so preparing for next season in the Championship might be a smart idea.

Edwards has the experience of taking a club from the Championship to the Premier League, and although it didn't quite work out for Luton Town in the top division, they certainly put up a strong fight with a poor squad. Wolves fans have certainly reacted badly to the potential O'Neil appointment, with some even suggesting that they protest against the decision.

Edwards, described as 'insane' by former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, is doing a strong job with Middlesbrough at the moment, and although there are certainly better managers out there, going back to a former coach doesn't always work out well. If the two options are Edwards and O'Neil, then the former might be the better option for Wolves going forward.

It would be far from a perfect appointment, but bringing O'Neil back to Molineux could be worse for the club. There already appears to be a division between the fanbase and the board, with the supporters not reacting well to the O'Neil news, Fosun should be looking to steer well clear.

Michael Carrick is another option that is being linked with the job, but his lack of experience in management could count against him. With Edwards getting Luton promoted to the Premier League against all odds, he could be the right man for the job as they prepare for a potential season in the Championship.
