Christian McCaffrey remains on pace to (again) join the rarest of clubs after Week 9

It's been a bit of wild up-and-down three-game stretch for San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey.

In the Niners' Week 7 win over the Atlanta Falcons, the three-time Pro Bowler racked up a season-high 201 total yards from scrimmage, going for a campaign-best 129 yards and two touchdowns on the ground while adding 72 receiving yards on seven receptions.

A week later, however, facing a tough Houston Texans defense, McCaffrey was held to a season-low 68 total yards in San Francisco's 26-15 loss. He tallied just eight rushing attempts, gaining just 25 yards, his lowest single-game total in seven years, and caught a season-low three passes for 43 yards.

But on Sunday, in the 49ers' much-needed 34-24 victory over the New York Giants, CMC was back at it, gaining 106 yards and scoring a touchdown as a runner and adding 67 yards and a touchdown on five catches as a receiver.

As such, the 29-year-old continues to stay on pace to make NFL history by becoming the first two-time member of the highly exclusive 1,000/1,000 club.

Christian McCaffrey is on pace to become the 1st player ever to hit 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards in the same season twice

Following McCaffrey's performance against the Falcons, we took our first look at what it would take for him to become just the fourth in history to ever reach 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards in the same season.

It needs to be noted, of course, that the Stanford alum is already a member of this elite group, as he was the third and most recent to accomplish this rare feat.

The first was legendary Niners running back Roger Craig, who amassed 1,050 rushing yards on 214 carries and 1,016 receiving yards on 92 catches for San Francisco in 1985. Up next was Marshall Faulk, who tallied 1,381 rushing yards on 253 carries and 1,048 receiving yards on 87 receptions for the then-St. Louis Rams in 1999. And then there was McCaffrey, who racked up 1,387 rushing yards on 287 attempts and caught 116 passes for 1,005 yards for the Carolina Panthers in 2019.

When we looked at things two weeks ago, McCaffrey was on pace for 1,129 rushing yards and 1,253 receiving yards. His averages obviously took a significant dip following that subpar performance against the Texans (he was still on pace but not nearly as close), but after his big day on Sunday against the Giants, he now has 596 rushing yards (66.2 per game) and 626 receiving yards (69.6 per game) for the year, thus putting him on pace for 1,126 yards on the ground and 1,182 yards through the air.

San Francisco will prepare for a high-profile Week 10 divisional showdown with the Los Angeles Rams, against whom McCaffrey tallied 57 rushing yards and 82 receiving yards in the Niners' 26-23 overtime victory against their longtime rivals back in Week 5.
