Report: Kings eyeing free-agent center Precious Achiuwa

It’s no secret that the Sacramento Kings are severely undersized, but general manager Scott Perry apparently has something in the works to address that issue.

According to NBA insider Jake Fischer, Sacramento is interested in free agent center Precious Achiuwa, a veteran big man who most recently played for the New York Knicks during the 2024-25 season.

Achiuwa, 26, has been a solid rebounder throughout his five-year career, which aligns with the Kings’ interests.

Sacramento enters play on Monday ranked dead last among all NBA teams in rebounds per game (37.5) as it navigates the opening month without starting forward Keegan Murray (wrist surgery recovery).

The Sacramento Kings are looking at bringing in veteran center Precious Achiuwa, according to league sources.

If the Kings sign Achiuwa, a corresponding roster move would be required, as Sacramento currently has 15 players under standard contracts.

Russell Westbrook’s deal for this season isn’t fully guaranteed, but the future Hall of Fame guard has played well to start his Kings tenure. Second-year forward Issac Jones (non-guaranteed deal), forward Dario Saric, and wing Doug McDermott are other players who could become expendable if a deal is reached with Achiuwa.

Achiuwa, the 20th overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, averaged 6.3 rebounds per game over two seasons with the Knicks (2023-25). The Memphis product was on a training camp deal with Miami before being waived on October 18th.

For a team that is currently searching for upside in the frontcourt, adding Achiuwa is a low-risk move for Sacramento. Domantas Sabonis (13.6 rebounds per game)needs help on the glass, as Westbrook’s 4.8 boards per game come in at second on the Kings’ rebounding leaderboard.

The Sacramento Kings are coming off a dramatic win in Milwaukee, and their next goal is ending a losing streak against the Denver Nuggets.

Sacramento has lost five straight to the 2023 NBA champs but has a chance to snap that streak Monday night in Denver.

The Kings haven’t beaten the Nuggets since Feb. 14, 2024, a 102-98 win in Denver. They have a little inside knowledge in their camp, thanks to Russell Westbrook, who played for the Nuggets last season.

Westbrook signed with Sacramento late in the preseason and has already provided a spark off the bench.

He scored 12 points and had 10 assists in 34 minutes during the 135-133 victory over the Bucks, and he took on guarding Giannis Antetokounmpo when Domantas Sabonis was in foul trouble. Westbrook was also one of the Sacramento players to step in and defend Sabonis during a confrontation with Milwaukee’s Bobby Portis.

It is the kind of fight Kings head coach Doug Christie was happy to see and hopes will continue Monday night.

“For me, I’m about that life,” Christie said. “That’s exactly what I want to see because, ultimately, we don’t find out about each other until it gets rocky anyway. When things are good and sweet and things are going your way … it’s when it gets bumpy.

“What are we made of? What are we willing to do? They ran in and made sure he was good, so you check that box. You don’t let anybody get up in your face. Check that box. And then you respond. Check that box. So, for them, well done, but that’s one. There will be another one coming when we get to Denver.”
