He was carted off on Sunday, which was a strong indication that he’d miss the Steelers game. Now it’s official.
The Chargers are in a tough spot with injuries to both of their talented tackles. They lost Rashawn Slater before the start of the season shortly after giving him a big-money extension. Alt’s absence will be sorely felt on their offense.
The trade deadline is tomorrow afternoon, which gives the Chargers an opportunity to acquire a tackle, though it might be difficult to get a trade acquisition up to speed in time for Sunday Night Football against the Steelers.
They have Bobby Hart, Trey Pipkins III, and Austin Deculus listed as their top tackles on the depth chart, but Hart suffered a groin and ankle injury on Sunday as well. The initial practice reports for both teams will be filed tomorrow, giving a better idea of who might be playing tackle for the Chargers.
The Chargers managed to weather Slater’s injury well and still have the No. 5 ranked overall offense in the NFL through the first half of the season. They achieved a strong balance with a top 10 rushing and passing attack. But will that continue without Alt? Things could get difficult for them, especially if Hart misses time.
According to Pro Football Focus, the second-year player had allowed just 1 sack so far this season with one of the best pass-blocking grades in the league. He also significantly limited T.J. Watt’s impact in last year’s matchup on his way to earning the “Joe Alt Delete” nickname.
