Jaxson Dart makes honest comment on ‘lopsided’ fan attendance following loss to 49ers

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The San Francisco 49ers are known for having one of the most dedicated traveling fan bases in the NFL, and after the NFC West team’s 34–24 victory over the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium on Sunday, Big Blue quarterback Jaxson Dart couldn’t help but notice how outnumbered Giants fans were.

“That was interesting. I’ve never played a home game where it felt that lopsided,” Dart said when asked about the strong presence of 49ers fans in New Jersey. “They have a great fan base, and they traveled well.”

It’s clear Giants fans are having a tough time backing the team right now — between the team’s 2–6 record heading into the matchup with San Francisco and the brutal injury to promising rookie running back Cam Skattebo — but even Dart seemed taken aback by the sea of red and gold in the stands.

Dart’s comments were backed up by the on-field action as well, with the Giants’ offense committing back-to-back false starts in the second quarter due to the noise from 49ers fans, who were so loud it disrupted Dart’s cadences.

Furthermore, even before the matchup, the 49ers posted content on their social media channels showing throngs of fans walking the streets of New York proudly wearing team gear — a clear omen of the lopsided fan turnout to come the following day.

Giants fans’ frustrations weren’t just evident in their absence from Sunday’s game, either. Before kickoff, a plane flew over MetLife Stadium carrying a banner that read, “Mr. Mara, Enough is Enough — Clean House,” a clear sign of their growing desperation for change.

And as if the mood at MetLife wasn’t grim enough, the stadium’s notoriously poor turf claimed another victim during the matchup, as San Francisco rookie edge rusher Mykel Williams tore his ACL — just as teammate Nick Bosa did at the same venue in 2020.

Big Blue will look for a reason to get their fans back into the stands when they visit Soldier Field to take on the Chicago Bears on Sunday at 1 p.m. EST.
