What Regis Le Bris saw as Sunderland struggled against Everton - and what changed

The Black Cats were outplayed for most of the first half at the Stadium of Light, falling behind to Iliman Ndiaye’s superb solo goal and almost conceding a second as Jack Grealish hit the post and Thierno Barry missed a close-range sitter.

But after steadying the ship in the closing stages of the first half, Le Bris’ side successfully turned things around as they dominated after the break, with Granit Xhaka’s deflected shot securing the 1-1 draw that lifted them back up to fourth in the Premier League table.

“We didn’t start well, or the opponents started really well, they were better than us, they were dominant,” said Le Bris. “We were not composed on the ball and we turned the ball over many times, so it was like we fed their dynamic.

“They like spaces, they like counter-attacks, they like one-against-ones. Grealish, Ndiaye, they are really good when they have space to exploit, and because of our turnovers, it was possible to do that.

“Later in the game, I think we were more composed and we dominated the game, but these first 30 minutes were not at the level of the Premier League.

“It was a question of quality at that minute, but we switched on a bit later and we got back in the game.”

Player Ratings: The Sunderland player who is 'one of the best in the Premier League' - and one who 'changed the game'

Sunderland successfully turned things around against Chelsea in their previous game, and once again, Le Bris was proud of the resilience his team displayed as they battled back despite conceding an early opener.

The point means the Black Cats remain unbeaten at the Stadium of Light this season, and while the strength of Sunderland’s second-half showing meant they could easily have claimed all three points, Le Bris was satisfied with the final result.

“I think this league is so tough,” he said. “It’s a good reminder of how hard it is to win a single point in this league.

“We started [the season] really well, so we might forget that we are still a promoted team, with young lads, not experienced and so on. So, it's a good point to be fair.”
