Sources: Wolves eyeing 'insane' O'Neil alternative as secret release clause revealed

Wolves are considering appointing Middlesbrough manager Rob Edwards after Gary O'Neil decided against a return to the club, GIVEMESPORT senior correspondent Ben Jacobs has revealed.

The 42-year-old manager remains high on Wolves’ list of options and is believed to have a release clause in his contract with Boro, which runs until June 2028.

Molineux chiefs are understood to be considering several candidates at the moment, including former Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag, and have held talks with multiple managers following Vitor Pereira’s sacking on Sunday.

The club are reportedly looking to line up a replacement for the Portuguese manager before their visit to Chelsea on Saturday, the last match before November’s international break.

Jacobs, writing on X, revealed that Edwards remains high on Wolves’ managerial shortlist following a breakdown in talks with O'Neil.

Edwards, described as 'insane' by former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, spent four years at Wolves during his playing career and returned to Molineux after retiring in 2014, taking charge of the Under-18s squad.

He was appointed interim head coach at Wolves following the sacking of Walter Zenga in October 2016 and took charge of two Championship games before Paul Lambert took over.

Prior to Middlesbrough, Edwards also managed Forest Green Rovers, Watford and Luton, whom he led to promotion to the Premier League in 2022/23.

The 42-year-old was appointed at the Riverside Stadium in July and has enjoyed a strong start, losing only twice in 13 Championship games, with the club currently sitting second in the table.

Wolves parted ways with Pereira following a winless run of 10 games to start their Premier League season, with Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at Fulham proving to be his final match in charge.

The Molineux side sit bottom of the league table with just two points from a possible 30, eight points adrift of safety.

Following his appointment in December 2024, Pereira guided Wolves to 16th place last season and was rewarded with a new three-year contract by the Molineux hierarchy in September.
