Wolves need to add more firepower to their squad if they are to avoid relegation from the Premier League

Wolves have endured a dismal start to the Premier League season and are rock bottom of the table. They are winless in their first 10 fixtures and are eight points from safety behind Burnley in 17th. The Midlands outfit are inside the drop zone along with West Ham and Nottingham Forest.

Vitor Pereira has been sacked and they have a big decision to make on who to bring in as his replacement. The Portuguese boss was only handed a new contract in September. However, their recent poor run of form has resulted in his dismissal.

Wolves should target Norwich City star Josh Sargent

Norwich City are in the relegation places in the Championship with Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United. They have lost their last six matches on the spin and risk dropping into League One if they can’t turn their fortunes around quick. The Canaries managed to keep hold of attacker Josh Sargent in the summer amid links with the likes of Leeds United but could face a battle to do the same now ahead of the January transfer window.

Wolves should try and throw the USA international, who has made 29 caps for his country, a top flight lifeline this winter. He needs an escape route away from Carrow Road and a switch to Molineux would be a new challenge for him and a chance to show what he can do on the big stage before the World Cup next year. Even if they get relegated, he can still put himself in the shop window.

As per EFL Analysis, Norwich wanted £18 million for his services earlier this year. There were no takers at that price though which meant he remained in East Anglia beyond the last deadline. His contract expires in June 2028 but he won’t be happy with his current club’s start to this campaign under Liam Manning.

Why Wolves must take a punt on Josh Sargent

Sargent would give Wolves more firepower at the top end of the pitch. He has proved he can score goals in the second tier and will feel he has a point to prove. In addition, they have lacked that cutting edge up front since selling Matheus Cunha to Manchester United and need to add more quality to their attacking department.

The Missouri-born man moved over to Europe as a youngster in 2017 to join Werder Bremen. He broke into their first-team soon after and scored 15 goals in 83 games to earn a transfer to Norwich. The forward has since established himself as one of the Canaries’ most prized assets. Manning said back in August: “His record speaks for itself – I think he is the best Championship striker. He was first class in how he led the line and long may it continue.”

Sargent has found the net on 54 occasions in 145 outings so would be worth a punt by Wolves. Their recruitment in a couple of months’ time will depend on who they bring in as their next manager. Pereira managed to keep them up last term with relative ease but things didn’t go to plan for him recently.

They are staring down the barrel of a return to the Football League now but landing someone like Sargent would ensure that they have an ideal ready-made option in attack for next season if they do indeed slip out of the Premier League. Norwich’s resolve could be tested amid their struggles and although £18m may be seen as steep, that seems to be the going rate for players of his calibre at this moment in time.

Wolves were beaten 3-0 away at Fulham in their latest clash over the weekend. Defender Emmanuel Agbadou was sent off against the Whites at Craven Cottage. They are back in action on Saturday with an away trip to Stamford Bridge to play Chelsea as they hunt for their first victory.
