Update on Brendan Rodgers to Wolves as Premier League job race gets serious after Celtic…

Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic departure was far from ceremonious.

Rodgers was going about his business as usual last Monday, before the bombshell news of his resignation took Scottish football by storm.

The stunning return of Martin O’Neill in his place has been a great success so far, perhaps exposing just how much the team were underperforming under the previous manager.

But things can change very quickly. Dermot Desmond’s scathing attack on Rodgers may have raised doubts over his reputation, but he is still being watched by Premier League sides having become available.

And there has now been an update on one manager search in the English top-flight, with Rodgers firmly in the running.

Rodgers has managed three sides in the Premier League, having also worked under Jose Mourinho at Chelsea.

Since taking Swansea to the top-flight in 2011, he has enjoyed success there, at Liverpool and at Leicester. He certainly has a CV he can point to.

Rodgers has moved closer to the front of the queue for the job at Wolverhampton Wanderers after Gary O’Neill dropped out of the running.

O’Neill had been in advanced talks over a return to Molineux, having left the club 11 months earlier. According to The Telegraph, negative fan reaction has played a direct part in the decision for O’Neill not to return.

Wolves sacked Vitor Pereira at the weekend after a 3-0 home defeat to Fulham left them four points adrift at the bottom of the Premier League.

And with Rodgers among the contenders for the job, he could be set for an imminent return to action, as has been rumoured by some in Scotland.

Erik ten Hag and Rob Edwards have also been linked, but the former’s attainability as a candidate has been questioned. With Middlesbrough in the promotion places in the Championship, they are understandably reluctant to lose Edwards.

Rodgers would be a more readily available option after his Parkhead departure.

Robbie Keane has reportedly applied for the role, with his name also being linked with the permanent role at Celtic Park. But whether he is being considered for either remains to be seen.

Will Martin O’Neill replace Brendan Rodgers on a permanent basis at Celtic?

Celtic’s 3-1 win against Rangers in the Premier Sports Cup semi-final has played a big part in bringing back a feel-good factor at the club.

With Shaun Maloney, Mark Fotheringham and Stephen McManus doing the coaching side of the role, maybe this could be the perfect balance.

Ange Postecoglou, Kieran McKenna and Craig Bellamy are being spoken about as potential replacements, but all three are currently seen as unlikely to come in mid-season.

If Desmond can’t convince one of his main targets, he may ask for O’Neill to stick around for a little longer.
