Robin Roefs ended his spell at NEC Nijmegen to join Sunderland in August.
The 22-year-old had climbed through the ranks of the Eredivisie side’s youth system and spent four years with their first team before moving to Sunderland.
In his final months at NEC Nijmegen, the goalkeeper played alongside Bryan Linssen.
Voetbal Primeur have spoken to the 35-year-old forward, and he expressed his delight over Roefs’ rise at Sunderland.
The stopper has played every minute in the Premier League for the Black Cats, keeping four clean sheets and conceding eight goals. Ronald Koeman, Netherlands manager, called him up for the August international break but he’s yet to make his debut for Oranje.
Linssen has now backed the Dutchman to further impress for Régis Le Bris’ side.
“I’m definitely keeping an eye on him. If I can, I try to watch his games. It’s a pleasure to watch that kid grow. When you read the comments in England, you really wish him the best. There’s no better guy in football,” he said.
Last month, Roefs said he’s been enjoying his life with the Premier League club and also hailed their supporters. His displays for Sunderland continue to draw attention from his home country, including his former club.
NEC Nijmegen general manager Wilco van Schaik recently discussed potentially receiving more money [via bonuses] from Roefs’ sale to Sunderland. He also mentioned the sell-on clause agreed with the English club.
