Leeds United promotion hero Josuha Guilavogui linked with surprise next club

Leeds United promotion hero Josuha Guilavogui has been linked with a sensational return to the Bundesliga following his exit from Elland Road.

Josuha Guilavogui joined Leeds in late October 2024, after an injury crisis left head coach Daniel Farke with limited options to choose from in midfield.

Although Guilavogui played fewer than 20 games in all competitions for Leeds, with his appearances mainly coming as a late substitute, he provided valuable experience to Leeds’ Championship-winning squad.

Guilavogui recently admitted that he had not yet retired and remained open to a return to football should the right opportunity present itself.

Now, it appears that the experienced midfielder could be set to return to the Bundesliga, as Wolfsburg look to navigate the crisis currently engulfing the club.

Josuha Guilavogui linked with Wolfsburg move

According to Sacha Tavolieri, writing for Sky Sport CH, Guilavogui could return to football in the coming weeks by making a return to Wolfsburg.

Wolfsburg currently sit 12th in the Bundesliga table, having lost four of their last five games, just two points above the relegation zone.

With the pressure building on head coach Paul Simonis, the German club are reportedly considering bringing in Guilavogui to provide leadership and experience in the dressing room.

The report states: “Wolfsburg are considering bringing back Josuha Guilavogui, currently a free agent.

“The experienced midfielder, who previously played for the club, is seen as a valuable asset who could provide stability to a dressing room lacking direction.

“Internally, several voices have already spoken out in favour of his return, believing that his mentality and knowledge of the league could be crucial during this difficult period.”

Daniel Farke saw the value in Guilavogui’s experience

Although Guilavogui was a bit-part player on the field during his time with Leeds, head coach Daniel Farke saw the value that the vastly experienced midfielder could have in their hunt for a Premier League return.

Now, Wolfsburg look set to use the France international in a similar role as they look to get their Bundesliga season back on track.

Speaking to the Leeds United website following confirmation of his exit from the club, Guilavogui reflected on the role he played in the promotion campaign, stating: “I didn’t come to be the player who played the most, but the player who would help the most.

Should that be the last we see of Josuha Guilavogui, he will leave Leeds United with the best unbeaten league record in the club's history (16 games, 14 wins, 2 draws).

“I remember one sentence from our boss. He said, “Josh, sometimes the most important players are not on the pitch or are not the ones who are playing every game.” Every game, it’s the ones who are helping all the young players who are very important in the locker room.

“And I think that at the end, when I got this nickname, Uncle Josh, it’s because I was there for everyone, always trying to give my best at training when I was coming in.”

Now, six months on from leaving Leeds in May, Guilavogui could be back playing the role of Uncle Josh at the top level again.
