Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez is never short of detractors. And his latest comes from Chile, in the form of Roberto Rojas.
[Red Gol have comments from him today](https://redgol.cl/noticias/condor-rojas-elige-a-su-favorito-entre-claudio-bravo-y-dibu-martinez-tecnicamente-es-lejos-mejor) in which he argues that Chile’s Claudio Bravo is better than the Argentine World Cup winner. Yes, that’s Claudio Bravo who flopped in the Premier League with Manchester City.
Martínez made headlines this weekend for a glaring error in the loss to Liverpool. The Aston Villa goalkeeper played a pass directly to Mohamed Salah to open the scoring in simple fashion. Liverpool went on to win 2-0 after that.
It was a low moment for a goalkeeper who has established himself as one of the best in recent years. Indeed, alongside winning the World Cup, he’s won the Yashin Trophy and The Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper on two separate occasions.
They were recognition for his excellent performances for Aston Villa and Argentina in recent years. For some, he is undisputably the best goalkeeper in the world as a result.
Rojas, though, is having none of that. And he believes that Chilean goalkeeper Claudio Bravo is better by a distance.
“Technically, Claudio Bravo is far better. Dibu Martínez uses his height and physical strength, but technically he has many things to improve,” he said.
“On the other hand, Claudio, without having an exuberant physical stature, was very good technically. Comparing the two technically, Bravo is far better.
“A World Cup title carries weight, it goes down in history, of course it does. But Claudio is technically better. Besides, for me, being a world champion doesn’t count for much.
“Argentina had a very disciplined team and an exceptional player. They made the team work for that individual talent, like in the case of Messi.
“Martínez was part of a great team and was indeed crucial in the World Cup, but I’m analysing it more from a technical standpoint, not based on who made more saves or won more championships. Besides, Claudio won championships wherever he played.
“At the international level, Claudio had good results at every club he played for. That’s why I prefer Claudio Bravo.”
