Marcus Rashford faces the prospect of accepting reduced wages if he wants to secure a permanent move to Barcelona at the end of the season, according to reports.

When the Catalan club brought the Manchester United striker on loan during the summer, they inserted a £28m option-to-buy clause into the agreement.

The England international has made a superb start to the campaign, netting six times and registering seven assists across just 14 appearances.

Rashford received a rapturous reception from supporters at the weekend following his contribution to Barcelona's 3-1 triumph over Elche at the Lluis Companys Olympic Stadium.

The forward found the net with the decisive third goal for Hansi Flick's team on Sunday night, firing the ball off the underside of the crossbar, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Last month, Rashford expressed his desire to remain at Barcelona permanently, despite already accepting lower wages to secure the initial loan switch.

According to European football specialist Andy Brassell, the Spanish giants are keen to make the deal permanent, provided the player agrees to another salary reduction.

Speaking on the Trans Euro Express podcast, he discussed Barcelona's monetary constraints.

"Yeah, they're gonna make an honest man of him, it seems, and not just ask him to commit to another year's loan, which I've always suspected would be the case for obvious financial reasons," Brassell explained.

"I mean, look, in terms of what he's actually produced while he's there, it's a no-brainer to want to keep him.

"He's been absolutely brilliant. I think he's been allowed a little bit more latitude by the fact that Raphinha's been injured and has been a regular face in the crowd or on the sidelines, and starting argy bargy after El Clásico.

"But look, Rashford has fitted in really well. Hansi Flick's very pleased with him. He got another great goal, a terrific finish left-footed from an angle to see off the game against Elche, which they eventually won 3-1.

"Elche, tougher opposition than they might seem on paper. And they have Iñaki Peña, the former Barcelona goalkeeper in goal, who had a really good game [on Sunday], I thought.

"And look, he's clicking with their best players. He's clicking with Lamine Yamal; he's clicking really well with Fermín [López] as well. Barca look like they're gonna score goals with Marcus Rashford in the team. It's that simple."

Despite few players being willing to take another salary reduction, Brassell explained the bond between the club and the player. The European football pundit added: "I think the mutual happiness of the relationship so far is very important.

"The fact that there is interest in Rashford, clearly, especially with a view to England and the World Cup next summer, in how he's doing over here. But, it does feel maybe from his perspective that there's enough distance for him just to be able to get his head down and get on with the game without sort of, I guess, microscopic levels of attention.

"Clearly, working with Hansi Flick is a real bonus. Barcelona have got an option which is around, thought to be around 30, 35 million euros. As we've underlined, Barcelona don't have tons of money, but I think when you bear in mind that they could amortise that over the length of a contract, that they are planning to give Rashford another pay cut, if he will accept it.

"Obviously, he's already taken a pay cut to go there, but he is speaking their language, and I don't mean Catalan. And I think the plan is that they will give him a longer contract with the same sort of money that he's getting at the moment.

"So, it works out to be spread over a longer period of time, which is how they will make it work financially. And look, long may it continue. It's good for England, it's good for him, and we wanna see him doing his stuff."
