West Ham flop ‘on the verge of leaving’ – “Overplayed his hand” with Hammers transfer

HSV Hamburg could be a smart option for West Ham United striker Niclas Füllkrug in the January transfer window.

That’s [according to BILD and journalist Marcel Reif anyway.](https://www.bild.de/sport/fussball/fussball-kehrt-niclas-fuellkrug-in-die-bundesliga-zurueck-6908c3ff0580923d09985f7f) They’ve presented the German club as an option for the West Ham flop.

The newspaper reports that Füllkrug ‘wants to leave England’ in January. According to them, he is ‘on the verge’ of departing the Hammers despite a contract running until 2028.

He’s failed to find any form at the London Stadium and now wants to leave. His agent, Thorsten Wirth, has also been busy hinting at an exit.

“That always has to happen in cooperation with the club, but I think it could make sense to make a change,” he told the TOMorrow Business Podcast. He also openly admitted that the move to West Ham could now be considered a wrong one.

It appears they’re now eyeing up their options. A return to the Bundesliga would make perfect sense for the 32-year-old. Füllkrug scored 56 goals in the league during his time in it and was top scorer in 2022/23 with Werder Bremen. He is also only one of three players to score hattricks for three different clubs in the division.

Marcel Reif certainly feels a return would make sense and believes Hamburg could do with his goalscoring touch.

“Füllkrug has really slipped under the radar. He overplayed his hand in England,” he said.

“He certainly had the confidence. But then came injuries and consequently, adjustment problems.

“On top of that, he’s at a club that’s languishing at the bottom of the table, far below its own expectations. A return to the Bundesliga, where he became a national team player – why not?

“Strikers who can score more than eight goals are always helpful, and he can do that,” he added when asked about HSV directly.
