“A huge fee”- Tottenham must fork out a premium to land Serie A superstar IN 2026

Scott McTominay has no intention of leaving Napoli as Tottenham Hotspur eye blockbuster deal

Despite their disappointing result against Chelsea, Tottenham remain within touching distance of the Premier League’s top-four positions. The Lilywhites have secured five wins from their opening ten fixtures this season, highlighting the significant progress made under Thomas Frank. The Danish tactician has managed to improve the squad in several areas during his short time at N17.

The North Londoners now look far more disciplined and compact in midfield, thanks to Frank’s organised and structured system. Under Ange Postecoglou, Spurs were often too easy to play through, with opponents frequently carving open the midfield and exposing the defence, which regularly led to goals.

Scott McTominay has no intention of leaving Napoli as Tottenham Hotspur eye blockbuster deal.

Tottenham want to bring back Napoli star Scott McTominay to the Premier League.

The arrival of Joao Palhinha has brought stability and composure to the centre of the pitch this season. The Portuguese midfielder, alongside Rodrigo Bentancur, has formed a strong partnership, disrupting opposition play and providing valuable defensive cover. However, this newfound solidity has come at a cost. The defensive focus has limited Tottenham’s creativity, making it more difficult for them to unlock tight defences and create clear-cut chances.

Tottenham interested in landing Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay

Tottenham urgently need a dynamic box-to-box midfielder to complement Palhinha in the second half of the campaign. Bentancur’s limited attacking output has forced Palhinha to take on more offensive responsibility, which in turn affects his defensive effectiveness. As a result, recent reports have linked the Lilywhites with Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay, with Frank keen to strengthen his options in midfield.

However, as per Pete O’Rourke, Spurs would need to pay a premium to land McTominay in January. Speaking to Football Insider, O’Rourke said,

“He’s such a key man for them. He’s their talisman right now in that Napoli side, especially now with Kevin De Bruyne out injured. Napoli won’t want to weaken their squad by losing such an important player like Scott McTominay. He’s under contract until 2028, so, to even consider selling him would be a huge fee as well.”

O’Rourke explained that Napoli are unlikely to part with McTominay midway through the season, especially after Kevin De Bruyne’s recent hamstring injury against Inter Milan. The Serie A champions cannot afford to weaken their midfield as they push to retain their domestic crown. Nevertheless, the journalist admitted that Spurs could make progress if they are willing to meet a substantial valuation.

McTominay has quickly become a fan favourite at Napoli following his £30 million move from Manchester United last season. The Scottish international scored 12 league goals and played a key role in helping Antonio Conte’s side lift the Serie A title. His outstanding performances earned him the league’s Most Valuable Player award and even a nomination for the Ballon d’Or.

While McTominay would undoubtedly be an upgrade on Bentancur, paying a premium fee for a player who is clearly settled in Naples may not be the most sensible move. Tottenham would be better off targeting more realistic options as they look to build on last season’s Europa League success under Thomas Frank. Finding a creative and industrious #8 who can support Palhinha in midfield should remain a top priority for the Lilywhites heading into the January transfer window.
