YouTube Gold: Tiny Archibald’s Greatest Season

Nate “Tiny” Archibald is somewhat overshadowed today but he was legitimately one of the greatest point guards in NBA history.

After a rocky time in high school in Brooklyn, Archibald started college ball atArizona Western, a JUCO in Yuma, then transferred to UTEP the year after Texas Western won the 1966 NCAA championship. If that’s confusing, the name changed in 1967, so Archibald played for UTEP for three seasons rather than Texas Western. Interesting trivia: UTEP’s architecture is based on [this](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dzong_architecture). Who knew?

After his UTEP career ended in 1970, Archibald was drafted in the second round by the Cincinnati Royals. The Royals soon moved to Kansas City and Omaha - they split home games between the cities - before settling on KC later.

And in 197[3, Archibald had one of the greatest seasons in NBA history](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aoy0xApLkv8), leading the league in both scoring and assists with 34 points and 11.4 assists. No one else has ever done this, before or since.

Archibald bounced around a bit later in his career, playing for the Nets and the Boston Celtics, where he helped win the NBA championship in 1981. He was on the roster with the Buffalo Braves between his time with the Nets and Celtics, but never played there after an Achilles injury.

Archibald finished up with Milwaukee in the 1983-84 season and dwas inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1991. He is wildly underappreciated today.
