David de Gea nightmare takes fresh twist as statement made after Man United visit

The former Manchester United goalkeeper came to Old Trafford with Fiorentina in pre-season but it's been a season to forget for the Italian side so far.

Former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea faces more disruption at Fiorentina with the club announcing the sacking of head coach Stefano Pioli.

The Italian side sit at the bottom of the Serie A table after the first 10 games of the season, and are one of two clubs yet to win a match in the league so far this campaign.

The latest defeat was a 1-0 home loss against Leece on Sunday afternoon. That proved to be the final straw for the club’s hierarchy, who have decided to make a change ahead of the club’s UEFA Conference League clash away at Mainz on Thursday.

“ACF Fiorentina can confirm that Stefano Pioli has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the first team,” the club wrote in a statement on their official website. “The club would like to thank him and his staff for the professionalism shown during their time at Fiorentina.

“Daniele Galloppa will take charge of the first team temporarily, starting from this afternoon's training session.”

Despite Fiorentina's struggles, De Gea has been praised for his performances. He has so far kept two clean sheets in his 10 Serie A matches this season.

De Gea visited Old Trafford for a friendly match against United in August. "It's a game I'll never forget, for sure," said the 34-year-old after United won the match on penalties.

Piolo only joined Fiorentina in the summer, replacing the outgoing Raffaele Palladino. The former manager had led Fiorentina to a sixth-place finish and qualification for Europe last season.

The club now however face the real possibility of a fight to stay in Serie A at the end of the season. They are currently two points adrift of 17th-placed Pisa.

Following the European trip to Mainz, De Gea and his teammates face what could be a crucial match against Genoa in Serie A this weekend. Their opponents are currently in 18th place in the table, two points above Fiorentina.

De Gea has been active on social media around Fiorentina’s struggles this season. In a message to fans after last month’s 2-1 loss against Roma he wrote: “Understand the low spirits for all our supporters - the season is not how we imagined it.

"The squad are disappointed with everything so far, but we’re giving everything, and will come back with the fight needed for this club. Sempre Viola."

Last week he shared pictures from games and wrote: “Obstructions are there to be overcome.”
