The Philadelphia Eagles opened Week 10 with an explosive trade and closed out the first day of the week with a quiet move.
Eagles general manager Howie Roseman went to work as he traded a 2026 third-round pick to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for edge rusher Jaelan Phillips. The arrival of Phillips had every Eagles fan excited, but there was another move made the same day that went under the radar.
Philly signed wide receiver Danny Gray to the practice squad while releasing offensive guard Sua Opeta.
Gray returns to the Eagles after having spent all of last year on the practice squad and started this year's training camp on the roster before being cut at the end of July. He's made one catch for 10 yards in his career with the San Francisco 49ers back in 2022. Gray replaces John Metchie III, who was part of the cornerback Michael Carter II trade with the New York Jets.
Opeta spent five years in Philadelphia from 2019 to 2023, during which he started 10 of the 38 games he appeared in during his career. Last year and a small part of this year, he was on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before rejoining the Eagles two weeks ago on the practice squad.
Eagles add explosive receiver to roster
Eagles fans got to see early in training camp this year that Gray is a big-play player with great speed. He's gotten buried on depth charts because he lacks the consistency on offense and special teams to earn an NFL roster spot.
For the time being, Gray makes for a perfect practice squad player as the Eagles are feeling pretty good at receiver. With Metchie out the door, the Eagles are left with A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, Jahan Dotson, Darius Cooper, and Xavier Gipson on the active roster. Gray joins Britain Covey, Terrance Marshall, and Quez Watkins on the practice squad.

Even though it's unlikely Gray sees the field for the Eagles, it's at least a good feeling that the team has enough talent at wide receiver that if injuries happen, they are covered.
