Wolves are considering a wide range of managerial options to try and rescue them from relegation
Gary O’Neil’s decision to withdraw his name from the Wolves managerial process has left the race to fill Vitor Pereira’s vacancy wide open.
O'Neil, who was sacked as Wolves manager last December, was installed as the instant favourite to make a sensational return to the West Midlands. The 42-year-old even held discussions with the hierarchy over a possible comeback before eventually deciding that the timing was wrong for him at this stage of his career.
Edwards is thought to be admired by the hierarchy along with Ferencváros boss Robbie Keane and former Manchester United and Ajax manager Erik ten Hag. But who else should Wolves be considering? Here we take a look at some of the outside contenders that could make a big impact.
Brendan Rodgers
He won a total of 11 trophies in two different spells at Celtic before departing and is also credited with leading Swansea City to the Premier League via the Championship play-offs - and winning the FA Cup with Leicester City.
Rodgers, who also narrowly missed out on the Premier League title with Liverpool in 2013/14, has over 300 matches of Premier League experience, and an excellent track record with almost every club he’s managed.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
Manchester United’s recent struggles under Ten Hag and current boss Ruben Amorim has arguably left Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s tenure as manager of the Red Devils in a much better light than when he initially left.
Solskjaer, who won three trophies in his first spell with Molde after coaching United’s reserve team, had a poor first taste of management in England after joining Cardiff City mid-season in 2013/14 and suffering relegation. However, he started well at United finishing third and second in his first two full campaigns with the club while also reaching a Europa League final.
Solskjaer, who was sacked after a poor start to the 2021/22 campaign, has since only managed one club - winning 15 of his 29 matches in charge of Bestikas before surprisingly losing his job at the start of the season. The Norwegian has a good record at developing young players and is known for playing an exciting attacking brand of football.
Marco Rose
Marco Rose has spent his entire playing and coaching career in either Germany or Austria but is currently without a club. Rose won back-to-back Austrian titles and a cup with Red Bull Salzburg - leaving with a mighty win rate of 71%.
He guided Borussia Monchengladbach to a fourth place finish and the knockout places of the Champions League, finished runner-up in the league during his sole season at Borussia Dortmund and most recently won the German Cup during his three years with RB Leipzig.
Rose has described the basic ideas of his playing style as "emotionality, hunger and being active.” All factors which Wolves would need to show if they are to beat the drop.
