Manchester United loanee Toby Collyer is absent from West Brom training as he recovers from a muscle injury.

Collyer received permanent and loan interest from over a dozen clubs in the Championship during the summer transfer window, but West Brom won the race for his signature.

Former Tottenham midfielder Ryan Mason had the mandate of leading West Brom back to the topflight this season, but the Baggies have struggled and Collyer's loan stint has not gone as planned so far.

Collyer was limited to seven substitute appearances after his arrival. He broke into the starting team against Millwall last month and retained his role in the next game, but he picked up a muscle injury.

The 21-year-old is currently not training as he recovers from the issue. "Well, neither of them trained with a team, so no," Mason told the Express & Star when he was asked whether Collyer and a teammate would be available for selection against Charlton on Tuesday night.

Mason has previously praised Collyer, saying: "Toby's a young player, but we know we're going to need him and he's going to help us. I've wanted Toby for a few weeks now. He's someone that I really believe in, which is important and I have that belief in all of my players.

"But when you go on loan to somewhere, I think you need to feel like you're wanted from the club and the manager and he certainly is that. Hopefully we can help him because if we help him improve and grow as a player, then it's certainly going to be beneficial to us.

"I think there's loads of room and loads of growth to develop. That's certainly going to happen on the training pitch. The reality is the game is the best teacher.

"The more game exposure you can get, the better, especially at a young age. I'm sure and I expect that Toby knows that I believe in him, which for me is super important.

"I'm going to put a lot of energy, the same amount of energy that I've put into him as every other one of my players, to help them grow and improve."

Mason added: "He's a good kid, humble, wants to work, wants to be part of it. You can feel that as soon as you speak to him. He wants to play football, loves football and that's super important. We want those types of people in the building who want to work and be part of something."

Collyer made 13 first-team appearances in a breakthrough 2024/2025 season at Old Trafford.

Last year, a source discussed Erik ten Hag's fondness for Collyer and another source said he records 'freakish' running stats in training that are only bettered by Bruno Fernandes.

Ruben Amorim has praised Collyer. "He has very good legs, he's improving with the ball. He knows what he needs to do to play for this club and feels the club in the right way. He's really humble and when you work hard, you get the opportunity," said Amorim in January.

Collyer's contract at United runs until the summer of 2027, with the option of another year.
