Bruno Guimaraes update emerges after sitting out Newcastle United training - Keith Downie

Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes is a doubt for Wednesday’s Champions League clash with Athletic Club.

The Magpies have been in training ahead of their upcoming Champions League encounter, as they aim to bounce back from their humiliating defeat to West Ham in the Premier League.

It is a vital game for Eddie Howe, who could potentially be without a vital player in Bruno Guimaraes.

That is because, according to Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie, the 27-year-old missed training with the rest of his teammates on Tuesday due to illness.

Downie has stated on X that Bruno has been at the training ground, working on his own indoors away from the rest of the Newcastle United squad.

While he is suffering from illness, the Brazil international has not been ruled out of Wednesday night’s Champions League game against Athletic Club.

Downie wrote on X: “Bruno Guimaraes absent from Newcastle United training this morning, as he’s been suffering from a slight illness. The #NUFC captain was doing a recovery session on his own indoors and there’s hope he’ll be available to play in the Champions League tomorrow night.”

Who could replace Bruno Guimaraes against Athletic Club

If Bruno is unavailable then Howe will be forced to make a change to his midfield. Fortunately, he has plenty of options to choose from.

The likes of Lewis Miley, Jacob Ramsey and Joe Willock are all in contention to take the skipper’s place, should a space open up in the Toon starting XI.

Miley and Ramsey both started Newcastle’s last Champions League game, which was a 3-0 win over Benfica.

Howe’s side were struck by illness for that match too, with Sandro Tonali an unused substitute.
