ALLEN PARK — A day after losing starting left guard Christian Mahogany to a long-term injury, the Detroit Lions are bracing to be without offensive tackles Penei Sewell and Taylor Decker for next week’s game against the Washington Commanders at Northwest Stadium.
Sewell (upper-body) and Decker (knee) suffered injuries in Sunday’s loss to the Minnesota Vikings, and while Lions coach Dan Campbell doesn’t believe either injury is a long-term concern, he doesn’t see Decker or Sewell practicing Wednesday and wouldn’t commit to them being available for the team’s next game.
“Nothing new, other than nothing sounds long-term, which is good. It’s good news,” Campbell said. “I think it’s more about, are they going to be able to practice this week and are they going to be able to play this week? But nothing beyond that, I don’t feel like, as of right now.”
Campbell said Monday that Mahogany suffered a broken bone in his leg, rather than a knee injury as originally thought. Campbell said his knee checked out all right and reaffirmed his stance that Mahogany could return by the end of the season. He said Sunday that Mahogany could return in late December.
“For what the injury is — it’s a broken bone, so … relative to injuries, that’s a good thing,” Campbell said. “I think that thing will heal up, and it’ll be stronger than it was before.”
As for right guard Tate Ratledge, who briefly exited the game with what he described as a stinger, Campbell said there’s no concern with injury going forward.
When Mahogany went down, the Lions subbed in reserve guard Kayode Awosika, who’s been with the team since 2022 and has made seven starts. Campbell was hesitant to name Awosika the starter going forward, saying the team has multiple options that it will look at, such as Kingsley Eguakun, Michael Niese and Trystan Colon.
“I see Yode competing at one of those spots. … Listen, we’re looking at everything. We are,” Campbell said.
“Like I said, we’ll see where we’re at. But I don’t feel like this is — I can’t say one way or another whether we’re going to make a move (at the trade deadline).”
