Dominic Calvert-Lewin is completely ignoring crucial Carlo Ancelotti feedback at Leeds United (opinion)

Dominic Calvert-Lewin is still struggling to find his rhythm at Leeds.

The man born in Sheffield has only scored one goal in nine appearances for Leeds since moving to Elland Road in August, which came in a 3-1 win at Molineux.

Not to take anything away from the England international, but Wolves are without a win in ten Premier League games this season and just sacked Vitor Pereira – so a goal against them is not worth boasting about too much.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has only really experienced one truly prolific season in his career, the 2020/21 campaign, and he is currently ignoring the Carlo Ancelotti tip which helped him net 16 Premier League goals that term.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin actually needs to stop being so selfless

The Leeds No.9 admirably does a lot of running down the channels and comes deep to offer passing options for his teammates – as his heat map on Sofascore shows – although that might actually be a hindrance more than a help.

When asked by Sky Sports in 2020 for the secret behind his goalscoring form under Ancelotti, Calvert-Lewin revealed: “The biggest thing he taught me is to be more selfish in my movement and stay more central… my job is to score goals and be the focal point for the team.

“He said, if you’re running out wide you won’t score goals. Stay in the middle and finish with one touch. That was the only instruction he gave me and I went on to score 16 league goals.”

Calvert-Lewin actually managed to score 21 goals in 39 appearances across all competitions in that 2020/21 campaign by making a concerted effort to stay in the box more often.

However, the 28-year-old seems to have forgotten the advice from Ancelotti this season.

That aforementioned heat map shows Calvert-Lewin spends a lot of time on the flanks this season, with one particularly active area even showing that the striker tends to stay close to the centre circle for large periods.

Selflessness is costing Leeds when it matters

Daniel Farke surely admires Calvert-Lewin’s work rate, but the figures suggest he needs to conserve his energy for the crucial moments.

The summer signing has missed five big chances in the Premier League so far this season, and he is only averaging 0.9 shots per game this term.

It suggests Calvert-Lewin, who Leeds are happy with, is perhaps too tired to be giving these chances the required focus when they arrive, which is costing his side points.

As a result, Farke needs to remind his frontman of the Ancelotti advice which led to the best goalscoring campaign of his career.
