Andreas Christensen is now in his fourth season as a Barcelona player, having arrived on a free transfer in 2022 after his contract at Chelsea expired.
The 29-year-old defender signed a four-year deal at the time, meaning he is now in the final year of his contract and could end up departing Barça as a free agent in 2026 if not renewed.
Renewal unlikely despite Christensen being held in high regard
However, according to SPORT, as things stand, it appears extremely unlikely that Barcelona will offer Christensen a contract renewal, given the growing concerns around his injuries and fitness.
As such, if nothing changes, the Danish international’s time at Barça will come to an end on 30 June 2026.
Christensen is one of the most respected and well-liked players in the dressing room due to his calm nature and professionalism. Manager Hansi Flick has great faith in the ex-Chelsea star.
But being unable to rely on his regular availability remains a major setback. There is growing concern within the club because, despite his constant efforts to make himself available, Christensen struggles to maintain consistent fitness.

For instance, when it appeared that the defender might be ready to return against Club Brugge after training normally on Monday, he once again withdrew from Tuesday’s session during the warm-up rondos and was left out of the squad for the trip ot Belgium.
The numbers are telling
Since joining Barcelona back in 2022, Christensen has featured in 89 matches, but has missed as many as 75 games, a number that will reach 76 counting tomorrow’s encounter against Club Brugge.
The Danish centre-back has missed a total of 333 days through various injuries, with the longest being an Achilles tendon irritation that had become a recurring issue not so long ago and led to him being out for 38 games.
Sources within the club admit that Christensen’s problems go beyond the physical, requiring extra caution in his management.
Both the coaching staff and the sporting department have made every effort to ensure he feels supported and comfortable in his professional environment. Nevertheless, some factors remain beyond the club’s control.
Considering the situation, as things stand, Christensen’s exit from Barcelona in 2026 looks very likely.
