The New York Jets are 1-7 after last week’s bye. And that leaves one big question heading into Tuesday’s NFL trade deadline: will they be sellers or buyers?
First-year Jets coach Aaron Glenn, who has had a huge influence in roster moves since the Jets hired him in January, hasn’t given many clues as to what he and general manager Darren Mougey might do.
They already made one deal, trading away cornerback Michael Carter II to the Eagles for receiver John Metchie (III), a trade that freed up significant cap space for 2026. But Carter had been dealing with injury and seemed to be on the verge of losing his starting spot anyway. So what should we expect Tuesday before the trade deadline?
Here’s what to watch for, and keep it locked here all day for the latest rumors and news.
3 things to watch
Will he stay or go?
Breece Hall has been the most-talked-about trade candidate with rumors swirling around him since before the NFL Draft. But Glenn said last month that his position on trading Hall hasn’t changed since April, when he said he wasn’t interested in dealing the running back. Still, we think if a team offered the Jets a third-round pick a deal might get done.
The most likely trade candidate?
Of the notable names, it’s Quinnen Williams. He is set to become a free agent after next season and is the most likely to draw huge compensation in a trade. But as multiple outlets have reported, the Jets are only interested in dealing him if they get significant compensation: likely starting with a first-round pick in next year’s draft. Is a team desperate enough to offer that? We’ll see.
Why no fire sale?
The Jets are in an interesting spot heading into the deadline, because it probably would be best for their future if they tore down the roster for future assets. But they are also trying to build a new culture under Glenn and signed corner Sauce Gardner and receiver Garrett Wilson to contract extensions this summer, two players who have hinted they’re tired of losing, and might not exactly be thrilled with a rebuild. So that makes the tough tightrope the Jets are already walking even tougher for Glenn and Mougey to thread.
